Tunisian Crochet Is Fun and Easy!
For this blanket design I opted for fun, playful colors! I’ll be honest, since I first started making it my children have battled over who was going to be the one who got to claim it as their own! LOL
Want to see more behind-the-scenes of my family?
I chose one of my favorite acrylic yarns, the Big Twist brand from JoAnn Fabrics (check it out here!).
They have an enormous selection of colors so if you opted to choose the same acrylic for your project, you would easily find a color combo that suited your design style/preference!
Below you will find all of the instructions for making a throw sized playhouse blanket, but if you would like to create a larger or smaller size, you can purchase the full PDF pattern which will have exclusive links, more sizes and a forever guarantee of receiving any updates I make to the patterns!

GATHER YOUR MATERIALS:
- 6-7 SKEINS OF AN ACRYLIC (SIZE 4) YARN IN 5 COLORS + YOUR MAIN STRIPE COLOR
- The exact colors I used in the Big Twist Value yarn were: AQUA, BUBBLEGUM, LIGHT ROSE, VARSITY GOLD, TEAL, AND WHITE
- 6MM Tunisian crochet hook (here is the set I am currently using)
- scissors
- tapestry needles
Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern Notes:
In this design we will be doing a few new techniques. We will be adding increases, decreases and color changes.
Not to worry, I will guide you every step of the way during this process with a fun, easy-to-follow video tutorial below!

The sizing is based on the measurement of each “v” or peak in the chevron. design. Keep this in mind when you go to select your blanket size as you might need to go up or down in your hook size in order to stay close to the blanket measurements you are wanting to make.
***if you tend to crochet tight, you will want to go up in hook size. If you tend to crochet looser, you will want to go down in hook size.***
Again, it depends on your own tension and how you tend to work your yarn.
Remember, we are artists, and therefore even when following a pattern, you might things which turn out slightly different than the original design and that’s totally okay!
This particular stitch is worked in a multiple of 14 + 1 and the current measurement of one “V” is approximately 3.5″.
The Playhouse Blanket Pattern in the Throw/Twin Size
Measurements of this particular blanket pictured is appr. 45″ wide X 60″ long laid flat.
Gauge is appr. 4sts X 5rows = 1″ squared
- Begin with your first stripe color (this stripe will be double the size of your main stripe color; for me it’s white)
CH 183
R1 (forward pass row) – insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook, YO and draw up a loop. (leave this loop on the hook) *Insert your hook into the next stitch, YO and draw up a loop. * Continue adding loops to your hook all the way across by repeating the steps from * to *.
R2 (reverse row pass) – ***all reverse row passes are worked the same in this pattern***. YO pull through one loop. *YO, pull through 2 loops. * Continue like this all the way across repeating the steps from * to * leaving one loop remaining on your hook.
R3 (forward pass row) – ***this will be our forward pass row repeat***. Beginning with one loop on your hook, YO (this is the one stitch increase), insert your hook behind the next vertical bar. YO and draw up a loop. Insert your hook behind the vertical bar of each of the next 4 bars and complete a YO, draw up a loop for a total of 7 loops on your hook. *Next, slide your hook behind all three of the next three vertical bars, YO and draw up a loop (this is the decrease). Next, you will work a YO, draw up a loop in each of the next 5 bars. YO (one stitch increase), insert your hook behind the next vertical bar, YO (one stitch increase). Next, you will work a YO, draw up a loop in each of the next 5 bars. * Repeat this process from * to * all the way across ending with a YO (one stitch increase), insert your hook into the last stitch to complete the row.
***Please reference the video for more info and visual instructions if this seems a bit confusing***
R4 – 260: you will repeat rows 2 & 3.
R261: (bind off row) *with one loop on the hook, you will insert your hook into the next vertical bar. YO and pull through both loops. * Repeat from * to * ending with one loop left on your hook. At this point, you will but your yarn (leaving a long enough tail for weaving in your ends) and YO, pull all the way through to tie off the last stitch.
If you are wanting to mimic the striping below is the color layout:
Rows 1 – 40: bubblegum color
Rows 41 – 60: white
Rows 61 – 100: aqua
Rows 101 – 120: white
Rows 121 – 160: varsity gold
Rows 161 – 180: white
Rows 181 – 220: teal
Rows 221 – 240: white
Rows 241 – 280: light rose
Row 281: light rose
Now you will simply weave in your ends and you’re done!
I have found with this size of a blanket you don’t really need to block the blanket because the stitches lay quite nicely.
But, if you want more defined points on the end of your blanket you will likely want to block those portions of the blanket.

I have a question on the Playhouse blanket instructions. On rOw 3, it says to Yo after the tss3tog and then to Tss in each Of the next 5 stitches. When I do this, i end up with extra stitches. Is this instruction incorrect? Thank you.
Jerica
yes, that is a typo it seems. You shouldn’t do a yarn over after the tss3tog. Have you watched the video tutorial?
Carol WhittakeR
Thank you. I thought it might have been a tYpo.
